Parent Tidbits

SKs

We are in our last few month's of school and we are working very hard to prepare them for grade 1.

Here are some ideas you can do with your child at home to help keep the constancy for that transition to the big grade 1.

* 20 minute timer for lunch.  The children will need to be encouraged to do less talking and more eating.

* practice opening reusable containers and packaged wrapped foods such as granola bars, yogurt tubes, thermos , oranges bananas on their own.  They will not have the help like they do in kindergarten to do this therefore, it will delay their eating time if they're struggling with.this.

* If you are planning to send your child in shoelaced shoes they need to be encouraged on how to tie their own shoes before putting them in shoes such as these.

* letter and number recognition! Your child should be at this point recognizing letters even if you pull them out of order.  Do not be fooled of rote memorizing  The children should be associating most sounds to the letters that will be required for reading.  Children should be able to see sight words such as

the.    but.    to.      then.   for.        dad.       about.      in.   after.   like

all.     in.      my.     this.    mom.    what.     is.      many.   how.    time

Words with ( ing) knowing  the ing in words

Be able  to associate rhymes

Cat.   Bat.  Mat.  Rat. Mat

Sit.   Bit.    Fit.

Boy  toy

Mop. Top     All of these words should not be needed to  be sounded  out but  noticed in books you read with them
